Small drawstring purses called reticules came into fashion at the end of the18th century. With the narrow skirts of neo classical gowns there was no longer any room to hide pockets as was done under the voluminous shirts of earlier periods. The reticule was an indispensable fashion accessory during the regency, ever since then women everywhere have loved purses the purse never went out of fashion again even when the skirts got wider again, we still love to carry them today.
